Basic Red Light Therapy Questions
What is red light therapy?
Red light therapy (RLT) is a treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light—both visible red light (630-700nm) and invisible near-infrared light (NIR, 700-1200nm)—to improve skin appearance, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. It works by stimulating mitochondria, the powerhouses of your cells, to produce more energy, leading to various health and wellness benefits. The combination of red and near-infrared wavelengths allows for both surface-level benefits and deeper tissue penetration.
How does red light therapy work?
Red light therapy works at the cellular level. Both the red light and near-infrared wavelengths penetrate your skin at different depths and are absorbed by your cells, particularly by the mitochondria. This stimulates ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production, increases cellular energy, reduces oxidative stress, and promotes tissue repair and regeneration. The red light (630-700nm) works more effectively on surface-level tissues like skin, while near-infrared light (700-1200nm) penetrates deeper to reach muscles, joints, and bones.
Is red light therapy scientifically proven?
Yes. There is substantial scientific research supporting the efficacy of red light therapy. Numerous peer-reviewed studies have demonstrated its benefits for skin health, pain reduction, inflammation, muscle recovery, and other health-related outcomes. The technology has been studied for over 40 years and is used by healthcare professionals worldwide.
What's the difference between red light therapy and infrared?
Red light therapy actually combines two types of light: visible red light (630-700nm) and invisible near-infrared light (NIR, 700-1200nm). The visible red light penetrates a few millimeters into the skin and is excellent for skin conditions, collagen production, and surface-level treatments. Near-infrared light penetrates much deeper into tissues, reaching muscles, bones, and joints, making it an effective tool for pain relief, reducing inflammation, and promoting deeper tissue healing. High-quality devices, including all Zen Glow products, combine both wavelengths for maximum therapeutic benefits across all tissue depths.
